Born in Tokyo, Mayuko Katsumura studied with Prof. Yasuro Sumi and graduated from the Music High School of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. In 1997, Mayuko moved to London to continue her studies with Prof. Yfrah Neaman at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Right from the start, Mayuko distinguished herself in national music competitions in her native Japan, winning the First Prize in the Japan Soloist Contest in 1995. In 2002, she was First Prize at the Ivan Sutton International Chamber Music Prize in London. In 2003, Mayuko won the Second Prize in the Michelangelo Abbado International Violin Competition in Italy and the Paolo Borciani Prize for her outstanding interpretation of George Enescu’s 3rd. In 2004, she won the First Prize at the A. Miserendino International Competition in Palermo, Italy. 

Between 2004 and 2005, Mayuko performed extensively with major Romanian orchestras including Timisoara Banatul Philharmonic, Brasov and Craiova Oltenia Philharmonic. In addition, she gave a highly acclaimed recital at the Ateneul Roman in Bucharest which culminated with her August 2005 live performance on the Romanian National Radio (Chausson Poeme and Enescu’s 3rd Sonata).
